Start here, step 5: your journal

Every trade you take lands in your journal by itself. Add one note to each and in a month you will know what works for you.

Step 5 of 64 min readUpdated Sep 30, 2026

A journal is where you learn from your own trades. Yours fills itself: nothing to type to get the trades in. This is step 5 of 6.

What to do

  1. Open Journal. Your trades are listed with entry, exit, size, fees and result.
  2. Open one trade. Write one or two lines: why you took it, and whether you followed your plan.
  3. Rate how well you followed your plan. That is not the same question as whether it made money.
  4. Add a tag to name the setup, for example breakout. Tags let you ask later which setups work.
  5. Once a week, open the weekly review and read it. The guided Sunday review.

The first numbers you will meet

Win rate
The share of trades that made money. High is not always good: small wins and large losses can still lose money
R
Your result counted in units of what you risked. A trade that risked 50 and made 100 is +2R
Profit factor
Total won divided by total lost. Above 1 means you made money overall
Drawdown
How far your account fell from its high point

Each has a two-minute lesson: open it from the number in the journal. Meanwhile, how trades get into the journal answers most questions about missing or grouped trades.
