Link an MT5 or MT4 account

Open Accounts, press Link an account, pick MT5 or MT4, and type your login number, the investor password and the broker server name. The first sync brings in all your past trades.

You need three things: your login number, the investor (view-only) password and the broker server name. You type them in Accounts, under Link an account. You do not install anything in MetaTrader, and it works with every broker that offers MT5 or MT4. If you use the short menu, Accounts sits under All tools.

Steps

  1. Open Accounts and press Link an account.
  2. Pick your platform, MT5 or MT4.
  3. Pick the kind of link. Read-only (marked Start here) uses the investor password. Guarded, on Pro and above, uses the master password so FxMind can close or reduce a trade under rules you set. Press Continue.
  4. Type the Login: the account number, digits only.
  5. Paste the Investor password. If you do not have it, see find your investor password.
  6. Type the Server exactly as MetaTrader shows it, for example BrokerName-Live02, and pick it from the list. You find it in the MetaTrader Navigator panel or in the account-opening email. The list only shows servers for the platform you picked.
  7. Optional: type a Label you will recognise, like FTMO 100k.
  8. Press Check and link. It usually takes 3 to 6 seconds. FxMind finds your broker's server, signs in, and checks which password you typed.
  9. When it says the account is linked, press Open the account, or go on to set your guard limits.

What happens next

FxMind signs in and reads your balance and open trades. Then it copies your past trades into the journal, month by month, oldest first. On our test account, 3 years of trades took about 8 s. After that, only new trades are added, and each trade is saved once.

Each account on the Accounts page shows a status word. The ones you meet while linking:

connecting
Signing in to your broker's server
syncing
Copying past trades into the journal
live
Trades and profit or loss update in real time
reconnecting
Connection lost. FxMind keeps trying by itself

All the statuses, and what each account menu item does, are in manage a linked account.

Common problems

  • Wrong server name. BrokerName-Live and BrokerName-Live02 are different servers. Copy the name from MetaTrader. Do not type it from memory.
  • Wrong platform. An MT4 login does not work on an MT5 server, and the other way round. If your server is not in the list, check that you picked the platform your account is on.
  • Login is not digits. The login is the account number, digits only, 4 to 12 of them. It is not your name or email.
  • Master password pasted. On a read-only link FxMind refuses it and asks for the investor password. Nothing is traded. The same in reverse: an investor password on a guarded link is refused.
  • Wrong password several times. After a few failed tries, FxMind stops and shows why, so your broker does not lock the account. Fix the password and link again.
  • "Another account link is still running." Wait for it to finish, then try again.
  • "This account was already used in a free trial." Choose a plan to link it.
  • "Every address we have is taken." FxMind connects to your broker through an internet address that only you use. If none is free, the account is not linked, you get a place in a line, and an email when yours is ready. Nothing is charged for the wait and your password is not stored.
  • Weekend. When the market is closed, FxMind pauses the connection and wakes it up at the open. A status of market closed on Saturday is normal.

Uploading a file instead

If your account is not on MT5 or MT4 (cTrader and Match-Trader are next), or your broker blocks outside connections, upload a CSV file or a MetaTrader HTML statement into the journal. You get the journal and your numbers, but no live profit and loss and no warnings on that account. See Start here, step 2.

The internet address your broker sees

Your broker sees the internet address your connection comes from. On Free, the trial, Trader and Pro, FxMind connects from its own server address, and the accounts of other customers use that address too. Some prop firms flag accounts that log in from an address other traders share. If that worries you, a Dedicated IP gives all your accounts one fixed address that nobody else uses: it is included with Elite and Desk, and it is an add-on ($15 a month) on Trader and Pro. We assign it for you from our own group of addresses, near London or New York, where most broker servers run. You add it on the Billing page. Details on pricing.

How many accounts you can link

Free links 1 account, read-only. Trader links 2, Pro up to 3, Elite up to 6 and Desk up to 10, MT5 or MT4 in any mix. If you need more, add an extra linked account for $8 a month. For prop firm tests, a challenge account slot costs $6 a month: when a challenge ends, you move the slot to your next challenge account. Both are on the Billing page.
