Find your MT5 or MT4 investor password

The investor password is the view-only password of your MetaTrader account, MT5 or MT4. Your broker sent it when you opened the account. You can also set a new one in MetaTrader in about a minute.

Every MT5 and MT4 account has two passwords. The master password lets you trade. The investor password only lets someone view the account. FxMind asks for the investor password. Your broker sent it in the account-opening email. If you cannot find it, you can set a new one inside MetaTrader in about a minute.

Where to look first

  • The account-opening email. Search your inbox for your broker's name plus the word investor. That email usually lists three things: the login number (your account number), the master password and the investor password.
  • Your prop firm dashboard. A prop firm is a company that lets you trade its money after you pass its test. Most of them show the login, the server and both passwords on the account page.
  • Nowhere. Some brokers only send the master password. Then set the investor password yourself with the steps below.

Set a new one on a computer

  1. Open MetaTrader 5 or MetaTrader 4 and sign in to the account with your master password. The steps below are the same in both.
  2. Go to Tools, then Options, then the Server tab.
  3. Click Change next to the password field.
  4. Type your current master password.
  5. Select Change investor (read only) password.
  6. Type the new investor password twice and confirm.

Set a new one on your phone

  1. Open the MetaTrader 5 app and go to Settings. On MT4, do it on a computer or in your broker's client area.
  2. Tap the account, then choose the option to change the password.
  3. Pick investor as the password to change. Type the current master password, then the new investor password.

What it can and cannot do

See balance and open trades
Yes
Read your full trade history
Yes
Open, close or change a trade
No
Take out or move money
No

That is why FxMind asks for this password by default. With it, we can fill in your journal and send you alerts, but nobody holding it can touch a trade. Changing the investor password does not change the master password. You keep logging in as before.

Once you have it, go to link an account. The full path for a new trader starts at Start here, step 1.
