Read the news calendar before you trade

What the News calendar page shows: impact, forecast, previous and actual, how far price usually moves after a release, your exposed positions, the weekly COT table and the filters.

Big news can move price fast. The News calendar lists the economic releases coming up and shows how far price moved after the last 12 of each one, so you know what a number is worth before you hold a trade through it. Open it from the menu: News calendar (News on a phone).

The Next up card

At the top sits the next release worth a countdown: the next high-impact one, or the next release of any kind if none is high. It shows the time, the forecast and the previous number, and the usual move of the instrument in the 15 and 60 minutes after the last releases. It also says which of your open positions the release touches, and how far your nearest stop is. Press See past reactions to open the details.

Reading a row

Releases are grouped by day, with a Today label and a Now line showing where the clock is. Each row has:

Impact
Bars, three lit for high impact. How much this release usually moves price. High impact covers inflation (CPI), jobs reports and interest rate decisions
Time and currency
When it comes out, in your time zone, and the currency it moves
Forecast (F)
What economists expected the number to be before it came out. Also called the consensus
Previous (P)
The same number from the last time this release came out
Actual (A)
The number that was reported, once the release is out
Avg move after
The average distance between the highest and lowest price in the 15 and 60 minutes after the release, over the last 12 releases, in pips. Direction is ignored
Exposed
A badge that appears when one of your open positions includes this currency

A pip is the smallest standard price step. On EURUSD one pip is 0.0001, so a move from 1.1040 to 1.1085 is 45 pips. Gold is shown in dollars and indices in points. The averages come from our own 1-minute candles. They describe the past. They are not a forecast and not advice.

Open a release

  1. Press a row. On a computer it opens under the row. On a phone it opens as a sheet from the bottom.
  2. Read the chart Reaction to the last 12 prints. A print is one publication of the number. Bars above the line mean the instrument rose after the release, below the line that it fell. The height is the high-to-low range in the window.
  3. Read the figures: largest and smallest 15-minute move, how often the instrument rose, how often the number beat the forecast.
  4. Read Your open positions. It shows which of them include the currency and how the usual move compares with your stop.
  5. Use the buttons: Ask the analyst starts a question about it, Guard settings opens your guards, and Add to Google Calendar adds this release to your own calendar.

Filters

  1. Press Currency and tick the currencies you want. All currencies clears the choice.
  2. Choose the Impact: All, Medium and high, or High.
  3. Switch on Only what I trade to keep the releases that touch the symbols in your open positions and pending orders.
  4. Press Clear filters to start over.

Times follow the time zone in your profile. The line at the top right says which one. To change it, open Settings.

This week's positioning (COT)

Under the list sits a table named This week's positioning (COT). COT is the Commitments of Traders report. It is a weekly US government report on who holds futures contracts on each currency. It is a futures report: FxMind reads it only to see how large speculators are leaning on each currency.

Net positioning
Whether large speculators are, on balance, betting a currency will rise (a positive number) or fall (negative) against the US dollar
Weekly change
How much that number changed since the last report
3-year range
The lowest and highest net number in the last 3 years, so you see where this week sits

The report is published weekly and arrives about 3 days after the positions it describes. It measures current positioning and is not a prediction. Press See the full weekly COT brief for the public page.

  2. Press Copy link and add it to your calendar app as a subscription.
  3. Anyone with the link can read it, so keep it to yourself. Make a new link stops the old one at once. Turn off ends it.
