The daily loss limit is the most you may lose in one trading day. It ends more prop accounts than anything else, and almost always for one of three reasons that are not obvious from the sentence.
1. Open trades count
The limit is measured on equity, not balance. Equity is your balance plus the profit or loss of everything still open. So a position sitting 2% underwater has already used that 2% of your daily room, even though you have not closed it and the loss is not real yet.
This is why traders breach while *waiting for it to come back*. The trade recovering later does not help: the rule was measured at the worst moment, and most firms check it continuously. A few firms count only closed trades, or check the limit once a day at the reset. FxMind shows which one your firm uses, in the rule's own text.
2. What the day is measured from
Every firm picks a starting point for the day. Which one it picks changes the rule completely. FxMind handles these four:
- From your balance at the reset
- The kind way. Open profit at the reset does not raise the line.
- From your equity at the reset
- Open profit or loss at the reset counts.
- From the higher of balance or equity at the reset
- The strict way. Giving back profit that was open at the reset uses up the limit.
- From your starting balance
- One fixed line for the whole account, the day does not move it.
On the strict way, carrying profit into the day makes the rule tighter. Take a $100,000 account with a 5% limit ($5,000). If you carry $2,000 of open profit past the reset, equity is $102,000 and the floor for the day is $97,000, not $95,000. Giving back that $2,000 and then $3,000 more is a breach, even though you are only down $1,000 on the account.
3. When the day resets
Your trading day is not midnight where you live. Most forex firms reset at midnight on the broker's server clock. MetaTrader servers often run on UTC+2 or UTC+3, so that midnight falls around 17:00 in New York.
Two things go wrong here. A trade you think is tomorrow's is still today's, so it eats room you thought you had back. And a losing day that you expected to end at midnight local has already ended hours ago, or has not ended yet.
FxMind uses your firm's reset time and shows it on the Guards page, next to Firm day: Resets and the time. If it has not measured your broker's clock yet, it says the time is an estimate.
Where to see it in FxMind
- Open Guards and pick the account.
- Look at Room left: the smallest distance between your equity now and a loss limit, in money.
- Open the Daily loss limit rule to see what it is measured from, the lowest allowed equity today, and what happens if every stop loss is hit.
What to actually do about it
- Know your number in cash, not percent. *$420* is a decision you can make; *5%* is arithmetic you will not do mid-trade.
- Size the trade against the room left today, not against the account. Half your daily room on one idea is how one bad idea ends a month.
- Watch the projected number. FxMind adds up where your open stops would take you if every one of them filled, which is the honest worst case of the position you are holding.
- Set the warning level where you will still act on it. 90% of the way to the limit is usually too late to think clearly.
